Artificial grass has become significantly more popular in Southampton and surrounding Hampshire over the past decade, and product quality has improved to match. Modern artificial grass looks more realistic, lasts longer, and handles Southampton's rainfall patterns better than earlier generations. But there are still important considerations that not every installer will volunteer upfront — and getting these wrong can lead to a product that's expensive to replace and difficult to live with.

Drainage: The Most Overlooked Factor

Artificial grass itself is porous — rain passes through the backing into the sub-base below. The problem arises if the sub-base isn't properly constructed to channel that water away. On Southampton's clay-heavy soils, natural drainage is often poor, which means a well-constructed permeable sub-base — typically crushed aggregate — is essential to prevent water pooling under the grass and causing the backing to lift or smell over time. Ask any installer specifically how they handle drainage on clay subsoil, and be wary of anyone who dismisses it as unimportant.

Heat Retention

Artificial grass can become significantly hotter than natural lawn in direct sunlight — surface temperatures of 50–60°C have been recorded on warm summer days. For gardens where children or pets use the lawn in hot weather, this is worth factoring into the decision. North-facing and shaded gardens are usually fine; south-facing plots in full sun during summer are worth discussing with the installer before committing.

Quality and Pile Height

Artificial grass quality varies enormously. Pile height, density, and the yarn profile all affect appearance and durability. A higher pile height (35–40mm) tends to give a more realistic appearance, and a higher density means the grass holds its shape better underfoot over time. Ask to see physical samples of the specific product being quoted, not just marketing photos.
