Most turf laying failures happen not because of poor quality turf or bad installation, but because of what happens in the two weeks after the turf goes down. The establishment period — when turf roots are knitting into the prepared soil below — is the most critical phase of the whole project, and mistakes made during this window can mean the difference between a lawn that thrives and one that shrivels or patches.

Watering: How Much and When

Newly laid turf in the Southampton area needs to stay consistently moist throughout the establishment period. In spring, this typically means watering once daily in the absence of significant rainfall — enough to soak through the turf and into the top 50–75mm of the soil below. The most common mistake is surface watering that wets the turf but doesn't penetrate to the root zone, leaving the roots with no incentive to grow downward. Lift a corner of the turf after watering — if the soil beneath is damp to the touch, you're watering correctly. If it's dry, apply more.

Avoiding Traffic in the First Fortnight

Until the turf has rooted into the soil — which typically takes ten to fourteen days depending on temperature and moisture — foot traffic should be kept to an absolute minimum. Walking on unrooted turf compresses the soil and disrupts the root contact that the turf is trying to establish. If access across the new lawn is unavoidable, use planks to distribute weight.

When to Mow for the First Time

The first cut should happen when the turf has clearly rooted — test this by gently pulling at a corner and checking for resistance — and the grass has reached approximately 75mm in height. Set the mower high for the first cut: removing more than a third of the blade height causes stress to newly established turf. Gradually lower the cutting height over subsequent mows.
