We excavate to a proper depth, lay and compact a Type 1 sub-base, and set the falls to carry water away from the building rather than towards it. Where a patio meets the house, we keep the finished surface clear of the damp proof course — a detail that gets skipped surprisingly often and causes real problems later.
Hampshire ground conditions
On the clay around Botley, Hedge End and Fair Oak we build in extra sub-base depth, because clay swells and shrinks through the year and will move a shallow patio. On the chalk around Winchester the ground is more stable but drainage runs need planning rather than assuming.
