Repointing

Professional repointing and brick jointing across Hampshire. Raked out and repointed in matching mortar to restore strength, weather resistance and appearance to tired brickwork.

About This Service

Repointing is one of the most important maintenance tasks for any brick or stone structure. When mortar joints fail — through age, weathering, frost damage or original poor workmanship — water penetrates the wall. In Hampshire's wet winters, this causes accelerating decay, damp penetration and, in retaining walls, structural instability.

Moore & Son provide professional repointing across Hampshire. We rake out failing joints to the correct depth, clean the face, and repoint in a mortar matched to the existing masonry — the right colour, the right profile and the right strength for the age and type of brickwork.

Why Mortar Mix Matters

A common mistake is repointing historic or older brickwork with a modern hard sand-and-cement mortar. Bricks fired before the mid-20th century are softer than modern bricks and need a lime-based mortar that allows movement and moisture vapour to escape. Cement mortar on soft bricks traps moisture and causes the brick faces to spall — creating an expensive repair that didn't need to happen.

We assess the brickwork, identify the correct mortar type and specification, and repoint accordingly. For older properties we use NHL (natural hydraulic lime) mortar mixes. For modern brickwork we use matched sand-and-cement. The finish — flush, weathered, recessed or bucket handle — is matched to the original profile wherever possible.

What We Repoint

  • Garden and boundary walls
  • House frontages and gable ends
  • Chimney stacks and pots
  • Retaining walls
  • Steps and paving mortar joints

  • Garages and outbuildings

Signs Your Brickwork Needs Repointing

Look for mortar joints that are recessed more than 10mm, crumbling or powdery mortar, water staining on internal walls, or damp patches appearing after rainfall. In Hampshire's freeze-thaw winters, mortar deteriorates faster than in milder climates — early repointing prevents much costlier structural repairs later.

We cover all areas across Hampshire including Eastleigh, Fair Oak, Winchester, Chandlers Ford, Southampton and surrounding villages. Free site visits and written quotations provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Look for mortar joints that are visibly recessed more than 10mm, crumbling or powdery mortar that you can remove with a fingernail, water staining appearing on internal walls after rainfall, damp patches or efflorescence (white salt deposits) on external faces, or vegetation growing in joints. In Hampshire's freeze-thaw winters, deteriorating mortar accelerates quickly once moisture gets into the joints. Early repointing is significantly cheaper than repairing the structural damage that follows if left.
The correct mortar depends entirely on the age and type of brickwork. Bricks fired before approximately 1950 are typically softer than modern bricks and must be repointed with a lime-based mortar — usually NHL (natural hydraulic lime) in a ratio suited to the brick type. Using modern sand-and-cement mortar on soft bricks traps moisture inside the wall and causes the brick faces to spall (break away), creating an expensive repair. Modern brickwork built after 1950 can generally be repointed with a sand-and-cement mortar matched in colour to the original. We assess the brickwork type before recommending a specification.
Professionally repointed brickwork using the correct mortar specification should last 20 to 30 years or more. The lifespan depends on the quality of the mortar mix, how well the joints were prepared (raking out to sufficient depth), and exposure to weather. South and west-facing elevations in Hampshire face more wind-driven rain and will weather faster than sheltered aspects. We rake out joints to a minimum of 15–20mm depth before repointing to ensure the new mortar has adequate key.
